7 Copywriting Courses (Free and Premium) That Will Kickstart Your Career

Updated: Jan 24, 2023

Do you want to become a copywriter? Are you looking to fine-tune and develop your copywriting skills? I have compiled a list of seven copywriting courses that I believe will kickstart your career.

This quick list has a mix of free and premium courses with a range of prices, and each is ranked out of five. I have ranked each course based on the content, the tutor and support, the resources, and the price.

So, when you're ready, scroll down to get stuck on the list!

Note: some of these courses are UK-based.

7 Copywriting Courses That Will Kickstart Your Career

1. Skillshare - Copywriting For Beginners

Price: Free once you join Skillshare - full Skillshare membership costs £10.25/month, and you can cancel at any time.

Course content: This course is perfect for beginners (the clue is in the title). There are 17 short videos covering the basics of copywriting, from understanding an audience, and writing catchy headlines, to writer's block.

Resources: 17 short videos; a class project.

Tutor: Jesse Forrest

Overall rating: 3/5

This course is brilliant to get started with if you have a low budget. £10.25/month for full Skillshare membership may seem a bit extra to access this course, but you can cancel at any time. The short videos give a good introduction to the world of copywriting without compromising on content. Jesse Forrest is also a veteran on the Skillshare platform, so you can trust his guidance and understanding.

However, if you are looking for something more substantial in a course or more content, then I don't think this will be for you.

2. LinkedIn Learning - Learning to Write Marketing Copy

Price: LinkedIn Learning subscription cost (annual plan) = £19.99/month; one-month free trial available.

Course content: This course covers everything you need to know about copywriting, from details about how to craft amazing copy, to writing on different platforms. There's also bonus content at the end covering brand voice and editorial calendars (a must for any content marketer).

Resources: 26 short videos divided into five sections; three quizzes; a project file; certificate upon completion

Tutor: Ian Lurie

Overall rating: 5/5

This course is one up from the previous one. I would argue that LinkedIn Learning courses are definitely worth the monthly subscription, particularly since this one gives you a certificate upon completion. If you're not sure, it's worth doing the one-month free trial to see if it is right for you.

The content covered in this course is thorough, and it should leave you ready to take the next steps in your copywriting career.

3. College of Media and Publishing (CMP) - Copywriting Course (QLS Level 4)

Price: £494.50 (or four monthly payments of £123.62

Course content: There are 20 lessons in this course that cover everything from the basics of copywriting to writing copy in newsletters, marketing emails, and press releases. It even has a bonus lesson on how to find work!

Resources: Learning area; 20 lessons, including an assignment for each lesson; extra reading encouraged; certificate and diploma upon completion

Tutor: Personal tutor upon enrolment

Overall rating: 4/5

I've tried to be as unbiased as I can with this one since I did the Proofreading and Editing course with the CMP. But I have little doubt that their courses are fantastic, and this one is no exception.

You get 20 lessons of in-depth content with extra reading available for those eager to learn more. You also have a personal tutor who marks each assignment and gives you detailed feedback on how to improve. And the course is endorsed by the Quality License Scheme here in the UK.

The only downside is the price. It is very expensive, even with the monthly payment plan. However, keep your eyes peeled on this one because the CMP often do seasonal discounts on all their courses.

Price: £59.99 to buy the course or £26.99/per month Udemy subscription

Course content: This course covers the secrets of how to write good copy, including how to write sales copy, press releases, and case studies. It also has a module on writing copy for videos, which many of the courses I've come across don't have.

Resources: 3 hours of video content; 43 downloadable items; certificate upon completion

Tutors: Len Smith and Sean Kaye

Overall rating: 2.5/5

From what you get from this course, I feel it's a little expensive. Having said that, the course is great if you want to fine-tune your copywriting skills, as it gives industry tips and tricks on copywriting that you won't get from a copywriting basics course.

If you are looking to develop your skills and grow your career, then this is the course for you. However, if you are looking to learn copywriting from scratch, then I would suggest choosing a different course.

5. One Education - Copywriting Level 5 Diploma

Price: £424.99 to buy the course or £348/year to access all One Education courses.

Course content: This course is quite similar in structure to the College of Media and Publishing copywriting course. It includes the basics of copywriting, skills, how to write online, press releases, and the responsibilities of a copywriter.

Resources: 14 modules and assessments; video presentations and online resources.

Tutor: Personal tutor upon enrolment.

Overall rating: 3.5/5

If you are looking for an official certificate, then this course will give you that. It is endorsed by the Quality License Scheme, meaning your diploma and certificate upon completion are legitimate.

The course itself covers everything you need to know to kickstart your copywriting career. The reason I have marked it down compared to the CMP course is that, at first glance, the content doesn't seem as comprehensive. Furthermore, if you fail an assessment (the pass mark is 60%) you have to pay £3.99 to retake it, which quite frankly I think is cheeky considering the amount you are already paying for the course.

Price: Free once you join Skillshare - full Skillshare membership costs £10.25/month, and you can cancel at any time.

Course content: This course focuses on copywriting techniques such as sentence structure, adverb use, active voice, and word choice.

Resources: 12 videos; exercises; optional resources (website links)

Tutor: Ruth Clowes

Overall rating: 3/5

Again, if you have a low budget, this course is perfect for getting started with writing great copy. When paired with the previous Skillshare course I talked about, you'll have a fabulous headstart in advancing your copywriting career.

However, this course doesn't offer an official certification, so if that's what you're looking for I would advise going elsewhere. Nonetheless, the content covered lays the groundwork for you to get started with copywriting techniques.

Price: Free

Course content: This course covers the very basics of copywriting, including headlines, blog post ideas, and persuasive content.

Resources: Video content

Tutor: Tyler Speegle

Overall rating: 2/5

As this is a free course, you can't expect as much in terms of the content. However, if you want to dip your toe into the ocean that is copywriting, I think this is a perfect place to start. As it's free, there's no monetary commitment for you, and if you decide that it's not right for you, you can walk away knowing nothing was wasted.

Headlines, blog posts and persuasive writing are the groundwork of copywriting, so once you've completed this taster you should have a sufficient understanding of the basics.

Wrapping Up

So those were seven copywriting courses that will kickstart your copywriting career. I've included a range of courses here from free to the pricey end of premium, and each has its advantages and disadvantages. Do you agree with this list? Let me know in the comments!
